Text Structure :

• Headline : Is a title of the news

• Newsworthy event : Tells the event in a 

summary form

• Background : Ellaborate what happened,

tell what caused the incident

• Sources : Comments by participants, witnesses, authorities, and experts involved in the event.

Generic Structure of News Item :

• Main Events / Newsworthy event(s): it recounts the event in summary form.

• Elaboration / Background event(s): they elaborate what happened, to whom, 

in what circumstance

• Resource of Information (Source) : it contains comments by participants in, 

witnesses to and authorities expert on the event

Language Elements

• Adverbia first, then, following, finally

• Cause and effect relationship (if-then, so, as a consequence, since, due to, because of, thanks to)

• Passive sentences, in tenses present
